Alright, so I'll admit I'm a nut for all things food. I get easily excited at farmers markets, I long for nights when I can slave away in the kitchen, and I spend my weekends visiting local farms for fun. This just isn't normal. So now imagine my reaction when dining at a new San Francisco restaurant, home to a chef I respect and love, and he himself walks in the front door. My jaw dropped! Fast forward to the point when I actually get to meet and shake his hand, not to mention capture the moment with a picture and I am one happy camper!
I've loved Hubert Keller since moving to the city of San Francisco 4 years ago. He's the owner of a number of restaurants including Fleur de Lys and now 6-week-old Burger Bar. He is a frequent guest on the PBS show Secrets of a Chef, as well as Bravo's Top Chef Masters finalist. While he's known for his talent in the kitchen, he also exudes this humble, welcoming, unassuming, laid back personality (I have trouble believing he's really French!). If being a successful chef wasn't enough, he's also a DJ in his spare time playing at the likes of Slow Club and a number of other restaurants and clubs around the city. Gotta love that!
Burger Bar is located on the 6th floor of Macy's with beautiful views of Union Square. With that said, you can't help but feel like you're visiting just another Cheesecake Factory flooded with tourist and families. However, a couple things surprised me: the staff was so friendly, the wait was minimal, and the food was exciting! I swear one day I'll go back and finally order the $60 foie gras, kobe beef truffle burger. This ain't Cheesecake Factory people!
I'm a girl who loves variety so I decided to order the sliders that came with the 3 different mini burgers listed below:
1 - Angus with bacon! (My favorite)
2 - Buffalo with caramelized onions
3 - Country natural beef with American cheese
We also ordered the highly recommended "Hubert Keller Burger" which came with Buffalo, caramelized onions, baby spinach, and blue cheese piled on a warm, toasty ciabatta bun. It was delicious, although next time I think we'll add some bacon to the pile!
While we waited for a table we couldn't resist taking a peek around the restaurant and that's when we noticed the dedicated milkshake bar. Yup, countless milkshake flutes being delivered to overjoyed recipients. I had to have one! So the second we were seated we ordered the cookie dough, almond, vanilla, chocolate fudge explosion shake. I don't know that that's what it's really called but it should be! My favorite part of getting shakes are the thick tube straws that help to slurp up all the sweet goodness. Milkshake was definitely worth it!
All in all it was a great experience. Some times it's nice to feel like a tourist in your own city without having to sacrifice the quality of your meal. And nothing tops meeting the man behind the magic! I'll definitely be back.
